This machaneh looks at the Shoah (holocaust).  Whilst an extremely difficult topic, it is always an extremely successful machaneh where the chanichim get infinite amounts of satisfaction out of learning about this topic that is so close to their hearts.  Fun is also had all around!  Throughout machaneh they will enjoy different fun, yet educational peulot (activities) around this interesting theme.

Sayarim update

Welcome again to flat low lands of Holland! Today every one is having the greatest time on the rides of the world famous wallaby world theme park! This is number one theme park in Holland, only two hours away from our olmen camp site.

Lunch today was made in fashion – all got 5euros and went to spent them on any thing veggie they could find in the place. Chips was popular as well as sandwiches… but fruit too!

Later tonight the site will be close and all will go back to main site to spend another night out and about with lots of ruach and singing.

Yesterday was a very special day were all came together to run their very own day called make your own day, MYOD. Only this year with a twist – make your own sikkum. Members of camp had to deal with summery of what they did so far and of what they learned – by running peulot to each other. It was all about five different groups, who chose to run activities on 5 different issues: how to memorialize, choose to fight rather then be victims , should we forgive, and if so how and who to?, where did it all lead to after the horrors, as the creation of Israel, and of course the never again theme. It all went very good and it looks like chanichim are more then capable to take on board the complex message of this camp!

For dinner they had an Israeli style dinner, with salad, falafel, pitot ad lots of humus too!

That it for now

Friday 8th August: Mainsite(Day 9)
Hello from Holland

So yesterday was another great day in our Sayarim camp in Holland. After mifkad and Avodah (Cleaning, which we do every day) and of course breakfast, all members attend a peulah about the righteous gentile. A board game was the method in which all learned about different special humaneness, such as Oskar shcindler ad many other who made a different. Kids were choosing their favorite person then after and plant a tree outside for them, similar to the Yad Va’shem museum show in Israel. Each group had to decorate the tree and explain why they chose this person an what is the message they take with them. From this one they all went to deal specific with one special gentleman, Mr. Janush Kortchak. In another Peulah they were divided to groups and had to act as different characters in the story of the orphans house, so to decide how to deal with the orphans and what to do next. They concluded that activity with a ceremony mentioning the 192 kids who lost their lives in Treblinka.

Later on the activities dealt with the resistance, mainly in the way youth movement where operating, in the ghetto, to try and stop or at list delay, the horrors. They all had to crawl through tunnels and faced different characters from the Warsaw ghetto upraise, such as Anteck Tzukerman. Kids had to undertake curtain activities such as creating weapons or sending letters to their friends, under impossible conditions. For the last part they all participated in a game where they tried to relies the prisoners sitting in jail.

Today few showers appeared but nothing too much. All learned about denial, in a fun way: a movie about man lading on the moon was taken, while all of a sudden it was appeared as just a false one. The conspiracy theory was explored and of course liked back to holocaust denial issues.

Lunch was made od bread, scrambled eggs, beans, tuna, salad, and nachos. And fruit was served too.

Thursday 7th August: Mainsite(Day 8)
Yesterday was a truly emotional day for Sayarim 08’. When learning about the tragedies of the shoah there comes a point within all of us when the sadness being studied goes from the page into our hearts and a tear is shed for we feel it as our own pain. The campers in Holland came to that point as they were exposed to the emotive spectacle that is the final solution exhibition. A mainstay of Sayarim in recent years this year’s is said to have been the best yet.

The exhibition opened with a walk down a train track under a sign which remains one of the cruellest jokes man has ever inflicted. “Arbeicht Macht Frei- work will set you free!” Once inside the exhibition was split into the themes such as children and loss with installations that breached all the senses.

Once everyone had been through, and cried all they could it was time for the conclusion. On tiyul the chanichim were given dream diaries for them to record their ambitions which were then collected. The diaries were then collated and burnt after the exhibition as a symbol of the loss felt during the holocaust. The dreams themselves however were returned afterwards, unbeknownst to the chanichim, the madrichim had carefully removed the relevant pages from the diaries after all we wouldn’t want them to think that being an international rock star is an unattainable goal.

On a lighter note it was beaming sunshine (pun intended) yesterday which set the perfect atmosphere for the Haberlin Olympics which began the theme of by-standing as it analysed how with a spotlight on Germany the world didn’t notice/ ignored what was taking place. It presents an interesting parallel with events today as we stand on the threshold of the Beijing games and the controversy surrounding their human rights record.

All in all Sayarim is now really in full swing and showing just how well mixing education with fun can work

Monday 4th August: Mainsite(Day 5)
Oh what a day it’s been on sayarim 08’. First up the stomping hordes rocked up to main site in a musical furore citing a detailed list of tiyul experiences for all who would open their ears. Having settled in our merry band settled in and prepared themselves for the speech from the movie voice over guy. “You’ve seen Rishonim. This year, prepare yourself for the most incredible machaneh experience ever to be had by anyone ever” Everyone was blown away by just how deep his voice is.

First activity of the day was the introduction Peulah which comprises of, you guessed it, an introduction. It’s a creative bonanza setting the atmosphere for machaneh and introducing the madrachim to the chanichim as previously they’ve only really known their tiyul madrachim. This year the theme for the introduction was fairytales. The madrachim marched their way down a catwalk of make believe to rapturous applause.

Second activity was an introduction the educational theme of the machaneh, the shoah.  The Peulah was called a life before the shoah and the chanichim were introduced to a representation of Jewish life in Eastern Europe before their world was brought down around them.

Stay tuned tomorrow for Haberlin olympics

Sunday 3rd August : Tiyul (Day 4)
Sayarim 08’ is bang smack in the middle of its last full day of tiyul it only seems like they’ve been gone a few days and that’s mostly because they have. Everyone is having a truly wonderful time, going go karting and catching the rays at the local water park...it really has been a fun packed 4days so far. In other news Habonim Dror! That’s right one group made it into the local paper the Hooven Gazette (English translation) with pictures and have since been spotted by locals. Several members of the aforementioned group have embraced their new celebrity asking for agent’s fees to come out of kupah, sporting bags with little dogs in them and arranging charity concerts. Unfortunately in the midst of all this craziness the weather has a mild turn for the worse as the heavens have opened and shared some water with the groups.

Saturday 2nd August: Tiyul (Day 3)
No update today as it is shabbat!

Hope you have a great, restful and meaningful day!

Shabbat Shalom!

Friday 1st August: Tiyul (Day 2)
Oh the weather is fine in the flatlands today, with a potent sunshine but there is a cool wind blowing in from the North-East bringing with it little pieces of Scandinavia taking the edge of the summer sun. The days walking has been successful with spirits high and voices full there have been rumours that this is the best experience that any of them has ever had. The groups even tried a local delicacy of chips and mayo-which was loved by all! One tiyul group managed to get into the local newspaper on the front page. The headline read "Brits having fun!"Highlight of the day is that one of the groups have bought a bbq and they are very excited about using it tonight. Shabbat shalom all.xx

Thursday 31st July: Tiyul (Day 1)
Hooray! After a long journey I am happy to say that everyone arrived happy and safely.

At 8am the 2 buses, 62 chanichim and 22 madrichim arrived in sunny Roosendaalt singing and dancing all ready to embark on a 5 day tiyul of their lifetime!! As soon as they arrived they were split into 5 tiyul groups and were introduced to each other and their 4 or 5 madrichim. Each kvutsah (group) then sat in their groups playing get to know you games, (a big hit was the game bang!!) and everyone sat round chatting whilst eating breakfast.

After breakfast each kvutsah (group) said their farewells and started to make their way to the campsite. Along the way they sang songs, got to know the locals (apparently everybody has been very friendly-the village has never seen so many kids!) and played more games. At 2pm they stopped for lunch where baguettes, spreads, crisps and drinks were the hit of the day!

Everybody is in good spirits and enjoying being away from England but more importantly enjoying having fun and getting to know each other.

2 kvutsot (groups) were lucky enough to go go-karting and swimming! One chanich was quoted as saying "this is the best tiyul ever" after only 4 hours. "The sun is shining the weather is sweet" (bob marley) and it certainly is in Roosendaalt with temperatures up to 24c!! All the kids are drinking plenty, wearing hats and sunscreen. Tonight's dinner is being cooked by your very own children and everyone can't wait till tomorrow...
